Sekoe White
scored 25 points in his final home game wearing The Buff and Blue
but it wasn't enough as Gallaudet lost to first place St. Mary's
College 84-74.
Gallaudet came out ready to play on Senior Day, starting all
five Seniors, White, Jon Mowl, Anthony Baskin, Chi Pun, and Justin Grigsby,
against the much bigger St. Mary's team and kept the game close
most of the way with a variety of inside and outside shots and
matching St. Mary's shot for shot throughout the game until St.
Mary's went on an 11-1 run with ten minutes left in the game that
broke a 62-62 tie. At the end of the run the score was 73-62.
Gallaudet fought back with several big baskets including a three by
White and an inside drive by White where he put the shot the ball
over two defenders to make the score 77-71. But that was as close
as the Bison would get.
The first half ended with St. Mary's up by three, 44-41. The
first ten minutes of the second half, both teams exchanged the lead
with Johnny
Jackson, Jr. making a shot over two defenders, and Tony Tatum making a three
off an inbounds pass that gave Gallaudet a 55-54 lead. Later a
three by White off a pass by Mowl gave Gallaudet a 58=56 lead.
Gallaudet had their last lead of the game when Jeremy Thrush
rebounded and put back a missed shot to give Gallaudet a 60-58
lead.
The final home points scored by Sekoe White came in the game's
final minute when he swished a three with 36 seconds left to bring
Gallaudet within ten.
For the game, Gallaudet made 51% of their field goals. White,
Thrush, Jackson, Jr., Baskin, Tatum, and Pun all made at least 50%
of their shots today. In addition to his 25 points, White added 6
rebounds, 3 assists, one block, and one steal. Tatum scored 19
points, grabbed 7 rebounds, and had 3 steals.
Gallaudet Head Coach Jeb
Barber praised the effort of his players and the fan support
they've gotten this year. Coach Barber said, "Our fans were great
and their support all season long has been important to us. Our
five seniors played their hearts out today for us and they had
great careers. I am proud of the effort they gave and what they've
contributed to the Gallaudet basketball program."
St. Mary's is now 20-4. Gallaudet is 11-13. Gallaudet ends the
season Wednesday night at York College at 8 pm.
