ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. - The Gallaudet University
volleyball team closed out the regular-season with a 2-2 split at
the Seahawk Invitational hosted by St. Mary's (Md.) College. The
Bison earned wins over Washington & Lee University and City
College of New York. Gallaudet's two losses came against
Bridgewater (Va.) College and No. 23 Eastern University.
Senior Justine Jeter (Noblesville, Ind.) led
the way as she had a team-high 53 kills and 47 digs in the four
matches of the two-day tournament held from Friday to Saturday.
Senior Amanda Krieger (Carmel, Ind.) followed with
45 kills and 48 digs while freshman hitter Ann
Whited (Fishers, Ind.) had 29 kills and digs. Senior
libero Shana Lehmann (Frederick, Md.) came up with
a team best 110 digs while sophomore Paige Johnson
(North Richland Hills, Texas) had 129 assists, 33 digs and seven
service aces.
The first day saw Gallaudet (22-13) drop the first match to
nationally ranked Eastern in four, 3-1. Gallaudet won the third set
but ultimately lost 13-25, 18-25, 25-22, 19-25. The Buff and Blue
turned around and beat the Generals from W&L in four; 25-21,
23-25, 25-20, 25-21. On Saturday, Gallaudet got off to a slow start
against Bridgewater and lost in three; 19-25, 18-25, 18-25. The
Bison ended on a high note with a three set win against CCNY;
30-28, 25-18, 27-25. Freshman Jessica Israel
(Frederick, Md.) had a strong day on Saturday with eight blocks in
two games.
Gallaudet will next host a Capital Athletic Conference first
round match on Tuesday, November 3, at 8 p.m. in the Field House.
GU is the third-seed and will welcome sixth-seed Marymount (Va.)
University with the winner advancing to Thursday night's semifinal
round.
