WASHINGTON, DC—The men went first in a conference
doubleheader against St. Mary's College at the Field House
tonight. St. Mary's won, 86-83.
During the first half, Bison guard Lance Gonzalez lit up the
Seahawk defense for 17 points, making 5 of 8 three-pointers. St.
Mary's Tyson Lesesne had 14 points to pace the visitors. At
one point, the Bison were looking at a 9-point deficit early on
that they evened during a 9-0 run off some of Gonzalez's long
shots. St. Mary capitalized on a speed offense, breaking away to
take an eight-point lead to the locker rooms at halftime 44-36.
When play resumed, the Seahawks began to distance their lead,
51-40 before the Buff and Blue came back to within 6, 51-45. The
Buff and Blue persevered, overcoming a large deficit and cutting it
to 6 points, 76-70 near the 3-minute mark.
Within the remaining minutes, the following would transpire:
A pair of Seahawk fouls in succession sent Chi Ming Pun and Onye
Davis to the line, where they made it a three-point game, 76-73.
After a Seahawk basket, Davis answered with a three-pointer to
cut the lead to two with 1:43 remaining.
Jon Mowl then sank another trey to tie the game 79-79.
Seahawk Tyson Lesesne responded for the visitors with a trey to
put St. Mary on top again, 82-79.
Mowl sank a pair of free throws to bring the Bison to within
one, 82-81, prompting a St. Mary's time-out with 25.7 seconds
on the clock.
Lesesne was fouled and sent to the line, where he made one of two
free shots, adding another point to the visitors' lead 83-81
with 15.6 seconds left in regulation.
Alex Franz was fouled, and made one more shot to give St. Mary a
three-point advantage.
Jon Mowl was then fouled by Mike Smelkinson, giving the Bison a
trip to the charity stripe. Mowl sank both shots, with Gallaudet
down one, and 1.8 seconds to go. Lesesne was fouled again, draining
the ensuing pair of free shots to pad the Seahawk lead 86-83.
Gallaudet's desperation buzzer-beater missed its target,
giving the Seahawks a win. Tonight, St. Mary snapped a five-game
losing streak.
The Buff and Blue starters all finished in double figures. Lance
Gonzalez finished with a team-high 23 points, followed by Jon
Mowl's 19. Chi Ming Pun added 14, while Onye Davis and Johnny
Jackson each had 11. The pair also led the Bison rebounding effort
with 6 apiece. Freshman Dan Fava rounded out Gallaudet's
scoring with five points. Mowl had a game-high 6 assists and 3
steals (Gonzalez also had 3 pick-offs).
St. Mary's Tyson Lesesne had a game-high 30 points, with
Mike Bowden and Calvin Wise each adding 10.
The Bison travel to York, Pa. in continuing conference play on
Saturday, January 19. They will face the Spartans of York College
at 8 p.m. in the Grumbacher Sport & Fitness Center.
