WASHINGTON, DC--The Buff and Blue took shots and returned
punches against the Goucher Gophers in an impromptu battle of the
perimeters. Both offenses combined for 23 three pointers,
with Goucher taking a slim edge off 13 treys, contrasted by
Gallaudet's 10. Gopher James Russo finished with a game-high 31
points, 27 coming off 9 shots from the arc.
The Bison countered Gopher offensive attacks with charges of
their own, not letting the Gophers get too far ahead in
scoring. The first half saw a 11-point Goucher lead whittled
to five, and then the redeeming halftime buzzer sounded, giving the
visitors a six-point advantage, 39-33. Goucher's James Russo
scored 20 to Bison guard Jon Mowl's 15 in this half. Fellow
Bison Jonathan Valencia chipped in a pair of treys, with David
Farias and Sekoe White both posting dial-ins from downtown.
Battle Perimeter stood at a dead even pace, 7 for the Buff and
Blue; 7 for the Gophers.
The Bison's relative youth and experience proved to be the
catalyst for a Gopher victory. In the second half, Goucher
reverted to its offense between the blocks, relying on Pierre
Jones' 12 points to stay ahead, and pad their lead. Bison center
Onye Davis capitalized on all five of his visits to the charity
stripe, as did reserve center Kazeem Babatunde (4-4). However,
foul-outs from sophomore Jonathan Valencia and Babatunde, along
with key turnovers and missed scoring
opportunities contributed to the increased Gopher lead, as
Goucher pulled away to finish the game and take Battle Perimeter by
18 points.
The next challenge for the Bison (4-17, 1-11 CAC) lies
within the University of Mary Washington (13-7, 7-5 CAC) at the
Field House on Thursday, February 8th. Tip time is set at 8:00 pm.
