– The Seahawks' bench
produced 55 points in leading the St. Mary's (Md.) College men's basketball
team roll to an 85-64 victory over Gallaudet University Saturday afternoon in Capital Athletic Conference
play.
Juniors T.J. Jordan and Tyson Lesesne led the
charge off the bench for the Seahawks with 13 points each with
Lesesne scoring his 13 in 12 minutes of action in the second
half. Jordan matched a
career-high with five steals.
The scoring margin for the game was 10 or less
for the first 11:03 of
the game before the Seahawks (12-10, 7-7 CAC) used a 17-2 spurt to
lead 32-13 with 3:44 left in the first half. SMCM carried a 38-22 advantage
into halftime.
Jordan sported 10 points
at the end of the half to lead all players, while the Bison's
sophomore guard Jon
Mowl (Fishers, IN/Indiana School
for the Deaf) had nine on three treys.
The Bison chipped away a little bit at their
deficit in the second half but Gallaudet could only get as close as
48-36 with 13:41 remaining in the game.
St. Mary's extended its lead to 79-52
at 4:05 with a 31-16
run and a 12-6 Bison spurt made the final, 85-64.
Junior Kyle Sullivan chipped in 10 points off the bench for SMCM, while junior guard
Mike Smelkinson was the only starter in
double digits with 13. Senior guard Dan Engelstad
hauled down a career-high nine caroms and dished out
four assists while adding seven points.
Mowl finished the afternoon with a game-high 18
points, while freshman guard Jonathan Valencia (Tuscon, AZ/Model Secondary School for the Deaf)
had 16 as he went 9-of-10 from the line. Junior Sekoe
White (Lexington, KY/Dunbar) and senior Kazeem Babatunde
(Providence,
RI/Rhode
Island School for the Deaf) each had 10 for
the Bison. White and Babatunde also led Gallaudet with eight
and seven rebounds, respectively.
Gallaudet (4-19, 1-13 CAC) will host
Catholic (17-5, 9-5 CAC) on Valentine's Day at
8:00.
