Hood upends Gallaudet, 75-47

WASHINGTON, DC--The Buff and Blue took on Hood College on the tail end of a Thursday Night Doubleheader at the Field House, with the visitors winning 75-47.

Within the first  ten minutes, the Bison were playing with the Blazers, ahead by one, 16-15 with a Jon Mowl trey taking the lead.

Gallaudet did not let size be a factor as they played with the bigger Blazers, pushing them for 11 turnovers to the Bison's 4 in first half action. Hood College showed their size, having three players in the starting lineup at 6'4 or taller--6'8 senior forward Jesse Gutekunst, 6'6 Rian McHenry and 6'4 Mark McGlone.

In the opening stanza Bison guard Jon Mowl paced the home team with 8 points, in addition to teammate Lance Gonzalez's 7. The Blazers had a 10-point lead at halftime bolstered by Ryan Junghans' 12. Gutenkunst, who leads the Hood rebounding charge with a 17.6 per-game average had a game-high 7 boards and 3 blocks at the half.

Second half action saw Mowl and guard Johnny Jackson tie for the Buff and Blue offensive scoring output with 7 points each. The Bison missed key shots as they went 7-for-19 (36.8%) from the field in this half, compared to Hood's 14-for-27 (51.9%). The difference in field goal percentages, long-range shots, (Hood 10, Gallaudet 3) and free throws resulted in the Blazer victory. The visitors shot 73% to Gallaudet's 55% from the charity stripe.

Hood's Ryan Junghans had a game-high 26 points, with Gutekunst scoring a double-double, posting 12 points and grabbing 11 boards.

For Gallaudet, Jon Mowl put up a team-high 15 points, with 3 assists and 2 steals. Guard Johnny Jackson, Jr. had 12 points and 5 boards with a steal and an assist, while Lance Gonzalez finished with 11 points, 3 assists and 2 steals. Freshman Joshua Sechman had a career high 6 rebounds to lead the Bison charge on the boards.

Gallaudet (0-7, 0-3 CAC) travels to Baltimore for a matchup in 2007's final conference game against the Mustangs of Villa Julie. Tip time is set for 4 p.m.
