Baltimore, MD - Spurred by emerging star Jimmy McGowan, the
Gallaudet men's swim team won their first meet of the season with a
100-71 victory over Goucher College while the women suffered a
121-73 setback despite many excellent swims. The
freshman McGowan from Florida broke two more team records: one in
winning the 100 Freestyle (51.60) and the other leading off the 200
Free Relay with a 50 Free time of 23.15. He additionally won
the 200 Free, cruising home in 2:01.45.
Senior Michael Hubbs also joined in the fun, winning three
individual events: 50 Free (24.00); 100 Back (1:01.80) and 100
Breaststroke (1:06.90). Other men's winners included the
medley relay of Clayton Anderson, Joseph Lopez, Tyler DeShaw and
Sammy Khorsandi and the free relay of McGowan, Anderson, Daniel
DiDonna and Ryan Kobylarz, which just missed the team record in
1:38.80. Further, junior Scott Cohen contributed key
team points in the 1000 Free, 100 Fly and 500 Free, and junior
Tyler DeShaw smashed his personal best in the 100 Fly (1:06.30).
"The key is that our swimmers continue to improve every week," said
Gallaudet Head Coach Bill Snape. "We will continue to train
hard until exams start in early December."
The Aqua-Bison next face Penn State-Altoona and Arcadia on Sunday
November 18th in Altoona, PA. A win would enable the men to move
within one win of .500 with a sweep.
"Most impressive to me," continued Snape, "was the fact that our
two free relays were less than one second off team records at this
point in the season. Our taste of success should make us
hungry for more. I certainly believe we are capable of
more. A lot more."
