The Bison received a balanced effort as 3 players scored in
double figures and six players netted at least 6 points in the
contest. Gallaudet was led by Jonathan Valencia, Sekoe White, and
Johnny Jackson who scored 15, 14, and 11 points. While the Blazers
relied on Ryan Junghans, Sean Robine, and Jesse Gutekunst's
25, 21, and 15 points to outscore the Bison. Gallaudet jumped
out to an early 8-4 lead on a three pointer by Sekoe White. At one
point midway through the firsthalf, after a pair of three
pointers from senior guard David Farias, Gallaudet held a
28-19 lead, only to see Hood make a late blitz, cutting the
Bison's 9 point lead to a 2 point advantage at halftime,
34-32.
In the second half Hood College
used their experience in close games and senior leadership from the
point guard position to overtake and finish off the Bison. Hood was
led by Ryan Junghans who scored 17 of his 25 in the second half.
The Blazers got 7 rebounds apiece from 6'8 center Jesse Gutekunst
and 6'5 forward Sean Robine. Gutekunst proved to be a defensive
thorn in the Bison's side with two blocks and altering
countless shots in the paint with his size.
Sekoe White added 6 rebounds, 5
assists, and 4 steals towards his 14 points giving him a padded
stat line. Sophomore point guard
Jon Mowl scored 8 points and
dished 6 assists. Mowl also had 6 turnovers in a forgettable game.
Overall, the Bison paced the 15-3 Blazers for most of the game,
except a five minute stretch where fouls took over, deciding the
fate of the game.
At halftime, a ceremony was held
to honor the Gallaudet University Women's volleyball team for
their 2006 CAC championship season and their berth in the Sweet
Sixteen in the NCAA Division III volleyball tournament.
The Bison (3-14, 1-8 CAC)
have the weekend off before hosting Christendom
College Monday January 29th at 8:00 p.m.
