RALEIGH, N.C. – The Gallaudet University softball team competed in the 19th annual Triangle Collegiate Softball Classic here Friday at the Walnut Creek Softball Complex. The Bison dropped both games as GU fell to Oberlin College, 10-7, and Greensboro College, 10-0 in five innings.
In the first game, Gallaudet (0-4) faced Oberlin College (2-0). The Bison scored five runs over the final two innings, but allowed 10 runs (eight earned), which proved too much for the buff and blue to overcome.
Oberlin picked up a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning and flirted with a perfect game through the first three innings before first-year second baseman
Sammie Howell (Columbus, Mont.) broke up the bid and reached base by error.
The Yeowomen added three more runs in the top of the fourth inning before Howell stole home to avoid the shutout. First-year first baseman
Mattea King (Capitol Heights, Md.) later drew a walk with the bases loaded to bring in another run and cut the lead to 5-2 before Oberlin erupted for five more runs over the next two innings.
Gallaudet entered the bottom of the sixth inning down to its final three outs as the Bison trailed by eight runs, 10-2.
First-year catcher
Geneva Brock (Carmichael, Calif.) started the comeback rally with a two-run double, followed by a RBI single from King to make the score 10-5 after six innings. The added Bison runs avoided the eight-run mercy rule and the teams played the seventh inning.
GU added more runs in the bottom of the seventh. Sophomore third baseman
Kinsley Bond (Beulaville, N.C.), who returned to her home state of North Carolina, reached on a fielder's choice then advanced to second base to score sophomore infielder
Olivia Wascher (Noblesville, Ind.). Senior pitcher
Lacey Drolsbaugh (Lansdale, Pa.) scored on a passed ball in the next at-bat. The two Bison runs cut the Yeowomen lead to three, 10-7, with no outs. Brock walked and later stole second base with one out. The next two Bison batters got out to end the game.
Drolsbaugh (0-3) took the loss in the circle for the Bison as she pitched 4.1 innings and struck out four batters.
In the second game, Greensboro (6-2) had three pitchers Ella Ebert, Nevaeh Buchanan and Leah Leonard combine to throw a no-hitter against the Bison.
The buff and blue struck out 10 times as the Pride pitching trio faced 15 batters. Greensboro scored 10 runs on eight RBI, six hits and no extra-base hits. The Pride scored six runs in the bottom of the third inning to break open a 1-0 game.
Olivia Wascher (0-1) took the loss in the circle for the Bison as she pitched 2.1 innings and struck out one batter.
