CLERMONT, Fla. – The Gallaudet University softball team had some fun in the sun here Wednesday at The Spring Games as the Bison split their two final Spring Break games.
Gallaudet defeated Knox College, 6-4, to snap a six-game losing streak to begin the day. The Bison then fell to Salem State University, 10-2, in five innings.
Gallaudet (3-13) went 1-4 during its Spring Break trip.
Gallaudet 6, Knox 4
GU took advantage of Knox's miscues in the field to score four runs in the bottom of the second inning to take an early 4-0 lead.
The Prairie Fire (0-11) got on the scoreboard with a run in the top of the third inning before GU pushed across a run in the bottom half and in the fourth to take a 6-1 lead.
Junior pitcher
Lacey Drolsbaugh (Lansdale, Pa.) led the Bison with three hits and had a RBI hit in the fourth to plate first year
Shaelyn Johnson (Redlands, Calif.), who doubled and moved to third on a Knox error. GU left runners on second and third in the fourth as the Prairie Fire got a key fly out to end the threat.
Knox got three singles from its first four batters in the sixth inning to get back into the game. The Prairie Fire added two more singles to finish the frame with three runs on five hits but left the bases loaded as the Bison got a key foul pop up to end the inning.
GU took the 6-4 lead into the seventh where Drolsbaugh retired the Prairie Fire, in order, to end the game. Drolsbaugh (2-5) recorded the complete game victory where she struck out five and walked none.
In addition to Drolsbaugh at the plate, first year
Kinsley Bond (Beulaville, N.C.) finished the game with three hits including one double. GU's first four batters combined to go 9 for 16 (.562) at the dish.
Salem St. 10, Gallaudet 2 (F/5)
Salem State scored at least one run in every inning against the Bison.
The Vikings (4-4) finished the game with seven hits which included one double and nine stolen bases.
GU trailed 8-0 heading into the top of the fifth inning. The Bison bats came to life and the Vikings defense went sideways with two miscues from their third baseman.
Sophomore
Andi Sisemore (Arlington, Texas) got hit by the pitch to begin the fifth. Pinch hitter
Kendra Cogswell (Riverside, Calif.) reached on an error and bad throw allowed Sisemore to scamper home for GU's first run in the game. The Vikings made another fielding error and Cogswell scored from third base to give GU two runs as the Bison trailed, 8-2.
In the bottom half of the fifth, the Vikings got on base and quickly worked their way around the bases. GU walked the final two batters as the last walk ended the game. The Vikings had the bases loaded and only needed one more run to end the game by the eight-run mercy rule after five innings.

GU returns home and will next host Albright College on Thursday, March 27, at 3 p.m. for a non-conference doubleheader.
