WASHINGTON - It was a blustery and cool Saturday afternoon at the GU Softball Complex as the Bison celebrated its graduating senior class on Senior Day. Gallaudet University played Lancaster Bible College in a United East Conference - Volt Division doubleheader where the Chargers got the best of the Bison, 7-2 and 8-4, before the sun-drenched fans in the stand.
Before the start of the game, the Bison softball program recognized their four graduating seniors in
Adele Daniels (Frederick, Md.),
Mallory Garcia (Rockwall, Texas),
Cassidy Perry (Frederick, Md.) and
Karla Gomez-Zepeda (Santa Rosa, Calif.), who has played on the team for three seasons.
Game 1: Lancaster Bible 7, Gallaudet 2
It was a close game for the majority of the game as both teams scored a run in the first and the visitors only held a 3-1 lead heading into the fifth inning. The Chargers scored four runs over the course of the final three innings en route to the five-run victory, 7-2.
Two triples played a key role in Gallaudet's run production in the first game. Sophomore outfielder
Lacey Drolsbaugh (Lansdale, Pa.) led off the bottom of the first with a triple to right field. Drolsbaugh scored moments later on a squeeze play at the plate.
The Bison ran their way out of a few innings as GU baserunners got thrown out by Charger catcher Carleigh Cleland.
GU was down 6-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth but Perry smacked a triple to right-center field to bring home first year
Andi Sisemore (Arlington, Texas) for the Bison's second run of the game.
Sophomore starting pitcher
Christina Elsbury (Uniontown, Ohio) took the loss in the circle as she threw a complete game and recorded four strikeouts.
Game 2: Lancaster Bible 8, Gallaudet 4
Gallaudet struck first and quick as Perry doubled home two runs in the bottom of the first inning. LBC knotted the game at 2-2 in the third before GU regained control with a run in the bottom half.
Lancaster Bible took advantage of Gallaudet's miscues in the field. The buff and blue committed errors in every inning that the Chargers scored. After only one error to start the game in the first, Gallaudet made nine errors over the final five innings of play to give away the game to the visitors.
The Chargers tied the game in the fourth and took the lead for good in the fifth. Gallaudet finished with a season-high 10 errors in the field.
Drolsbaugh hit her team-leading eighth triple in the bottom of the seventh and scored on a sacrifice bunt by first year
Olivia Taufu'i (Blackfoot, Idaho). Drolsbaugh's eight triples are second most in the United East.
Drolsbaugh (2-9) took the loss in the circle as she finished six strikeouts.
LBC pitcher Riley Danko (2-3) entered in the fourth inning to relieve Noelle Martin, who started for the Chargers in the circle.
GU (4-18, 0-12 United East) has lost its last 14 games while the Chargers improved to 10-15 overall and 4-6 in conference play.
