LATHAM, N.Y. – Gallaudet University placed 42 student-athletes on the 2022-23 United East Conference Scholar-Athlete list as announced by the conference. Each student-athlete was required to accumulate a 3.4 or higher grade point average for the fall and spring semesters combined and must have been in good standing on their team.
Gallaudet finished eighth overall among the nine United East institutions and five associate members. Lancaster Bible College was first with 115 honorees followed by Penn St.-Harrisburg (102), Penn College (100), St. Mary's College of Maryland (98), Penn St.-Abington (80), Penn St.-Berks (74), Wells (57). GU followed with 42 and SUNY Morrisville (36) was the ninth United East institution ranked. This is the last year for SUNY Morrisville and Wells in the conference as they officially left the conference July 1.
Gallaudet's record for United East Scholar-Athletes in a season is 64 set in 2019-20.
The United East honored 736 student-athletes this year from 14 different institutions who represent 30 different states and 10 different countries. GU, who completed its 13th year in the United East, had honorees hail from 15 different states and two countries.
Gallaudet had eight student-athletes earn United East Scholar-Athlete honors all four years including Payton DeGraw (Salt Lake City, Utah), Courtney Gentzke (Honeoye, N.Y.), Emma Giuntoli (Austin, Texas), Cassidy Perry (Frederick, Md.), Kyle Santello (Cooperstown, N.Y.), Ariel Senics (Fishers, Ind.), Leila Sicoli (Austin, Texas) and Ryane Smalley (Nicholson, Pa.). Since Gallaudet joined the United East there have only been 35 Bison to earn United East Scholar-Athlete honors all four years.
GU had 23 repeat honorees from previous year's United East Scholar-Athlete listings and five others earned United East Scholar-Athlete honors for a third time.
Gallaudet's women's sports had 29 honorees compared to 17 honorees from men's sports. There were four student-athletes that played more than one sport, three from women's sports and one who played a men's and women's sport. GU sponsors five women's sports and four men's sports that compete in the United East.
Women's soccer led the way on the women's side with 12 honorees followed by women's volleyball (nine), softball (four) while women's basketball and cross country had two apiece. Men's soccer had eight honorees to lead the men's side followed by baseball (four), men's basketball (four) and men's cross country (one).
Out of the 120 Gallaudet student-athletes that competed in the United East during the 2022-23 school year, 35 percent had a GPA of 3.4 or higher.
In addition to the United East Scholar-Athlete list the Bison had 13 student-athletes named to the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) all-academic team back in January for posting a fall GPA of 3.3 or higher. Plus, GU had 18 additional players land on the ECFC Academic Honor Roll for a fall GPA of 3.0 or higher. Gallaudet had 15 men's and women's track and field student-athletes get honored by the Colonial States Athletic Conference Winter/Spring All-Academic Team for posting a GPA of 3.2 or higher. GU had eight men's and women's swimmers named to the Atlantic East Conference All-Academic Team for a spring semester GPA of 3.2 or higher.
Gallaudet's total of student-athletes who earned all-academic conference honors this season is 96.
