AURORA, N.Y. – It was a long but successful day for the Gallaudet University softball program as the Bison swept Wells College in a United East Conference doubleheader here Friday on the road. The Bison left early in the morning and drove to New York and posted back-to-back shutouts over the Express, 6-0 and 4-0.
The Bison turn back around and return home on a high note as the Bison concluded the 2023 season with two consecutive wins. Gallaudet finishes the season with a 16-24 overall record and 10-14 mark in conference play.
Gallaudet's 16 wins are the most since the 2017 season where the Bison posted a 16-23-1 record in Coach
Justen Burns' first season at the helm. The 10 conference wins are a program record for the Bison.
Graduating senior
Christina Elsbury (Uniontown, Ohio) threw back-to-back complete game shutouts in her final game as an undergraduate. Elsbury struck out three batters in the first game and six in the second. The nine strikeouts helped Elsbury surpass 100 strikeouts in a season. She finishes the season with a 10-12 record, 3.58 ERA and 102 strikeouts in 158.1 innings pitched.
Elsbury also helped herself out at the plate as she combined to go 2-for-7 with two runs scored.
Graduating senior
Elaine Swecker (San Diego, Calif.) led the Bison with three hits in the first game while freshman
Aileen Balcazar (Burbank, Ill.) came through with a two-run single in the top of the seventh.
In the second game, GU scored single runs in the first, third, sixth and seventh innings. Swecker and fellow graduating seniors
Emma Giuntoli (Austin, Texas) and
Ariel Senics (Fishers, Ind.) tallied two hits each. Elsbury had one hit and two runs scored.
The Bison have won nine straight over the Express. GU finished with a 3-9 road record; all games were conference games. Gallaudet concluded the season with five shutouts.
