WASHINGTON – Down to the final out in the bottom of the sixth inning of the first game of two between Gallaudet University and Penn State Harrisburg, sophomore Elaine Swecker (San Diego, Calif.) calmly stepped into the batter's box.
While the blazing hot sun beat down on the GU Softball Complex, Swecker kept her cool and blasted a two-run home run over the left field fence to give the Bison a 2-0 lead in the United East Conference doubleheader.
That was Gallaudet's only hit in the game.
Freshman pitcher Christina Elsbury (Uniontown, Ohio) retired the Lions in order in the top of the seventh as the Bison kept their playoff chances alive behind Elsbury's eighth win as she struck out five.
The second game was another pitcher's duel as Elsbury ran it back in the circle against Penn State Harrisburg, who used a trio of pitchers.
Elsbury recorded one of her two strikeouts in the top of the second when Lauren Hess struck out swinging but not after fouling off 10 straight pitches.
Gallaudet (13-21, 7-13 United East) got on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the second inning when freshman Lacey Drolsbaugh (Lansdale, Pa.) singled to left field to plate freshman Lou Cherena (El Paso, Texas) as GU grabbed the 1-0 lead.
Penn State Harrisburg (19-11, 11-5 United East) knotted things at 1-1 in the top half of the third with a RBI double from Elaina Gates.
The game remained tied at 1-1 until the top of the sixth when Olivia Herncane doubled to left-center field to plate Gates as the Lions took the 2-1 lead.
GU got a runner on base in the sixth and seventh innings but manufacture a run to tie things up.
Carlssa Yeager (4-2) picked up the win while Mackenzie Sawdey earned the save for the Lions.
The loss eliminated Gallaudet from the United East playoffs while Penn State Harrisburg clinched a spot in the four-team tournament in May.
