WASHINGTON - It was a huge 11-10 win for Gallaudet University over Wilson College here Saturday at a blustery GU Softball Complex as the Bison defeated the Phoenix for the first time since the 2017 season. Wilson won the second game 15-5 in five innings to salvage the split.
Gallaudet (1-1) has only won three times against Wilson in the last 18 contests dating back to the 2014 season.
The Bison scored first in their opener as junior Ariel Senics (Fishers, Ind.) doubled to left field to plate freshman Lacey Drolsbaugh (Lansdale, Pa.).
Gallaudet broke open the first game with eight runs in the bottom of the third inning. Freshman Christina Elsbury (Uniontown, Ohio) doubled and tripled in the third inning as she drove in three runs. Elsbury made her softball season debut after she spent a few weeks with the Bison baseball team. She plans to bounce back and forth between teams this spring.
Wilson (1-1) answered with seven runs in the top of the fourth inning to take a 10-9 lead.
The Bison pulled off a double steal in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game and Senics singled home Drolsbaugh for the eventual game-winning run.
Elsbury (1-0) picked up the win in the circle with as she threw a complete game and struck out three batters.
In the second game, both teams scored three times in the first inning and GU added a fourth run in the bottom of the second to take a brief 4-3 lead.
Wilson broke open the game with seven runs in the fourth and five in the fifth. The Bison made a combined four errors in those two innings as the Phoenix went on to win by the eight-run mercy rule.
Junior Emma Giuntoli (Austin, Texas) slammed a solo home run over the left-center field fence in the bottom of the fifth inning to make the score 15-5. That was Giuntoli's first career home run.
Sophomore Elaine Swecker (San Diego, Calif.) took the loss in the circle even though half of the runs scored were unearned due to the seven fielding errors by the Bison. Swecker struck out four batters in 4.1 innings pitched.
Wilson starting pitcher Paige Dill (1-0) threw a complete game and struck out five batters in five innings pitched.

GU will play host to Notre Dame of Maryland University (0-2) tomorrow (Sunday, March 5) at 1 p.m. for a pair of non-conference games.
