GU starts Atlantic East Conference slate against St. Mary's (Md.) and Cedar Crest

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. - The conference schedule began for the Gallaudet University women's swimming team here Saturday on the road against St. Mary's College of Maryland and Cedar Crest College. The Bison lost, 124-44, to the Seahawks and 100-68 to the Falcons as GU started its Atlantic East Conference slate at The Aquatics Center on the SMCM campus. 

Gallaudet (0-4, 0-2 AEC) almost won one of the events outright when sophomore Amelia Oliver (Elkridge, Md.) touched the wall in 29.14 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle and just missed first against St. Mary's Marissa Fields (29.04). Oliver earned first-place points against Cedar Crest (4-4, 3-2 AEC) in the double-dual meet.

St. Mary's (6-5, 2-1 AEC) swept the double-dual meet as the Seahawks defeated Cedar Crest, 110-73.

Gallaudet's 200-yard medley relay team of freshman Amanda Hardin (Snellville, Ga.), freshman Katie Seffens (Castro Valley, Calif.), senior Jaelynn King (Springfield, Pa.) and freshman Sonya Szywala (Phoenix, Ariz.) finished second overall with a time of 2:16.81.

GU's 200-yard freestyle relay team of sophomore Ksenia Markel (University Park, Md.), Seffens, sophomore Samanatha Moore (Tucson, Ariz.) and Oliver finished in 2:13.71 to edge out the Falcons in second (2:16.00). St. Mary's swam the event as an exhibition.

Seffens earned second-place points against the Falcons in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:33.91). 

BISON TRACKS

  • Oliver was fourth overall in the 100-yard backstroke (1:16.38)
  • King placed fifth overall in the 200-yard freestyle (3:10.60), 500-yard freestyle (8:40.19)
  • Moore was sixth overall in the 200-yard IM (3:31.95)

UP NEXT
Gallaudet will travel to Owings Mills, Md., next Saturday, Nov. 19, to swim against Stevenson University and Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham at 2:30 p.m.
