Women's swimming close out home schedule with meet against Marymount (Va.)

WASHINGTON - The Gallaudet University women's swimming program closed out its home schedule here Saturday in the Field House pool against Marymount (Va.) University in a conference meet. The visiting Saints spoiled Senior Day for the Bison with a 204-26 victory.

Gallaudet (0-6, 0-4 Atlantic East) fielded a small team as several swimmers remain in COVID protocols and were not cleared to swim today. Marymount (5-4, 3-1 Atlantic East) won all 14 events to dominate the meet between Atlantic East Conference foes.

Freshman Amelia Oliver (Elkridge, Md.) led the way with second-place finishes in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events with times of 29.49 and 1:05.10, respectively. Oliver finished third in the 100-yard IM (1:16.06).

Sophomore Skyler Officer (Skokie, Ill.) finished third in the 100-yard backstroke (1:40.95) and fourth in the 50-yard breaststroke (50.14) and 500-yard freestyle (9:11.62).

Sophomore Paola Sarabia (Yuma, Ariz.) placed fourth in the 50-yard backstroke (50.99) followed by freshman Kayla Rubano (Fort Myers, Fla.) in fifth (51.92).

The quartet of Sarabia, Officer, Oliver and Rubano started the meet for the Bison in the 200-yard medley relay and touched the wall in third-place with a time of 2:57.02.

During intermission of the meet the Gallaudet coaching staff paid tribute to its senior class and several graduating student-athletes. Head coach Nick Pezzarossi and assistant coach Larry Curran thanked and recognized sophomore Solimar Aponte-Huertas (Williamsfield, Ohio) and Rubano from the women's team for their dedication and service to the program over the years.

BISON TRACKS

  • Sarabia placed fourth in the 50-yard butterfly (54.27) and was fifth in the 100-yard freestyle (1:27.69)
  • Rubano finished sixth in the 100-yard freestyle (1:29.42)
