WASHINGTON - The Gallaudet University women's swimming and diving program lost its final home meet of the 2017-18 season Saturday afternoon in the Field House pool to Bridgewater (Va.) College, 187-65. The visiting Eagles (7-1) won 13 of the 14 events over the Bison (4-6).
Junior Alisia Metante (Pleasanton, Calif.) won the 100-yard freestyle with a time of one minute, 5.51 seconds, to lead Gallaudet. In her other two individual events, Metante set personal record times with third-place finishes in the 50-yard freestyle (29.48) and 500-yard freestyle (7:19.23).
Sophomore Jackie Perkins (Hampton, Va.) was second in the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke events with times of 1:17.41 and 3:02.84, respectively. Fellow sophomore Jessica Monroe (Senoia, Ga.) placed second in the 200-yard freestyle (2:30.08) and third in the 100-yard butterfly (1:21.79).
During the first break of the meet, Gallaudet paid tribute to its senior class. Head Coach Larry Curran honored senior Faye Frez-Albrecht (Canton, Conn.) and student-assistant Chelsea Newberry for their dedication and service to the program. Thanks to Frez-Albrecht's courage she turned a negative situation, being disqualified at the NEAC championships two years ago, and made a positive change to improve equal access for all swimmers. Last year, Gallaudet was able to use lights at the starting blocks to help with the start of events and a powerpoint to breakdown the communication barriers. These elements were used at the 2017 NEAC championships and last summer Frez-Albrecht, Curran and Gallaudet garnered national media attention for these ground-breaking changes to improve collegiate swimming.
