WASHINGTON – Gallaudet University hosted
Cazenovia College on Friday night in a North Eastern Athletic
Conference (NEAC) meet. The women were unable to hold off the
Wildcats as they lost 130-75, while the men received an 11-0
forfeit by the Cazenovia men's team.
Sophomore Thyra Wood
(Great Falls, Mont.) was the only Bison to finish first in a race
as she won the 100 yard freestyle in 1:03.32. Despite the rough
night for the women's swimming team, six Bison women beat nine of
their previous personal best times. Junior Chelsea
Newberry (Twin Falls, Idaho) cut 10 seconds off of her
100-yard freestyle time (1:57.93) and 13 seconds off her 50
butterfly time (1:08.49) as she did her part in two relays for the
Bison. Shuxu Tian
(Tongling, China) cut down six seconds in the 50 freestyle (50.55
seconds). Sophomore Morgane
Vincent (Châtenay-Malabry, France) trimmed nine
seconds off her best time in the 1,000 freestyle (17:58.63), and
two seconds in the 100 breaststroke (1:42.80). Freshman Faye
Frez-Albrecht (Canton, Conn.) cut four seconds off her
100 backstroke time (2:11.25) and an impressive 21 seconds off her
200 freestyle (3:36.29). Senior Alexandra
Camell (Minneapolis, Minn.) set a new personal best in
the 100 backstroke (1:32.91) and sophomore Taylor
Mickelson (Fargo, N.D.) took eight seconds off her 100
freestyle time (1:22.85).
Although the Bison men's swimming team did not compete against
Cazenovia, seven swimmers also improved on their best times. Junior
Abdiel
Davila-Cruz (Orlando, Fla.) and sophomore David
Bruno (Patchogue, N.Y.) cut eight and nine seconds,
respectively, off their 200 freestyle times, 2:11.51 and 3:08.94.
Davila-Cruz also trimmed three seconds off his best time in the 100
butterfly (1:02.33). Four swimmers set new personal bests in the
100 yard freestyle; Nathan
Parkin (Elgin, Ill.) with a time of 1:10.22,
Matthijs
Wubbolts (Groningen, Netherlands) with a time of
53.13, Xuan Lin
(Fulton, Ill.) with a time of 1:14.42 and Seth
Washington (Frederick, Md.) with a time of 1:04.59.
Lin also cut four seconds off his 200 breaststroke (3:13.75) and
Washington cut five seconds off his 100 backstroke (1:19.43).
Junior Tony
Abshire (Sacramento, Calif.) cut time from two of his
personal records, an impressive 35 seconds off his best time in the
1,000 freestyle (17:14.05) and nine seconds off in the 500
freestyle (8:17.74).
The Bison men's and women's swimming teams will compete at
Greensboro College on Saturday, Nov. 1, at 1 p.m.
