WASHINGTON, D.C. – Sophomore
Alexandra Polivanchuk (Orebro, Sweden) won three
times to help Gallaudet University's women's swimming
team on Saturday in its double dual meet at the Field House pool.
Polivanchuk's victories were not enough as the Bison were
swept by North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) foes Cazenovia
College, 111-84, and College of St. Elizabeth, 107-81. Cazenovia
won the head-to-head meet with St. Elizabeth, 102-89.
Polivanchuk started her day with a win in the 200-yard IM as she
touched the wall in 2:27.83, over 15 seconds faster than the
second-place finisher. She followed that with a win in the 100
butterfly (1:05.89) and capped her day with a win in the 100
breaststroke (1:15.35). Her teammate junior Valerie
Farr (Fremont, Calif.) was third in the 100 breaststroke
as she was eight seconds off Polivanchuk's pace with a time
of 1:23.48.
Junior Katie Giles (Gaithersburg, Md.) took
second place in the 50 freestyle as she narrowly lost to St.
Elizabeth's Veronica Lubsen (28.99 seconds) as Giles touched
in 29.24 seconds. Freshman Liv Polzin (Frederick,
Md.) was right on Giles' heels at 30.07 seconds in third
place. Polzin later took third place in the 100 free (1:07.79)
while Giles clocked in at 1:08.56 to take fifth place.
The Bison (1-10, 0-4 NEAC) will next host College of Notre Dame
(Md.) on Wednesday, Jan. 23, at 6 p.m. to wrap-up their
regular-season schedule.
