Box Score DOVER, Del. - Wesley College swept the Capital
Athletic Conference women's basketball season series against
Gallaudet University with a 79-42 win on Saturday in the state
capital of Delaware.
Wesley (14-8, 8-5 CAC) wins its third straight game as the
Wolverines solidified their third-place standing position in the
conference while Gallaudet (11-10, 6-8 CAC) falls from fourth to
sixth with two CAC games left on the schedule. The top six teams
advance to the 2010 CAC tournament that begins on February 23.
Junior center Easter Faafiti (Pittsburg,
Calif.), the leading scorer in the CAC, led the Bison with 19
points and eight rebounds. Faafiti scored 12 of her points in the
second half where she also grabbed six boards. Fellow junior center
Nukeitra Hayes (Anderson, Ind.) scored six points
in the first half but was held to two points in the second half.
Wesley scored the game's first five points before the
combination of Hayes and Faafiti scored three baskets to give
Gallaudet the 6-5 lead just three minutes in. Wesley regained the
lead before Faafiti converted a three-point play at the 14:34 mark
to give Gallaudet the 11-9 lead; it's last of the game. Wesley
answered with back-to-back three-pointers from Shavonda Cephas (17
points), who hit four of her five three-pointers off the bench in
the first half.
GU cut the Wesley lead to 10 points, 34-24, with four minutes
left before halftime when freshman Maddie Morgan
(Wilmington, Del.) drained a three-pointer. The Wolverines
responded with another back-to-back three-point sequence. This time
guard Cory Boyd (12 points, 10 assists, nine rebounds) and senior
Michele Mules (eight points) hit the shots from outside. The
Wolverines led 42-25 at the break.
Wesley outrebounded Gallaudet 52-35 and scored 20 second chance
points. The Wolverines also netted 18 points off 20 Gallaudet
turnovers. Wesley hit 13 three-pointers as the team shot 39.7
percent from the field. Gallaudet shot 36.2 percent from the field
and was dreadful from the free-throw line where the Bison made a
season-low 26.1 percent (6-for-23). GU missed all nine attempts in
the second half from the charity stripe. Faafiti finished the game
1-for-12 from the line.
Junior center Angie Owens led the way for the Wolverines with 23
points and 15 rebounds. The starter recorded her 1,000th career
point with 1:30 left in the game as the Wolverines led by 34
points.
The Bison lost the first meeting with Wesley, 59-57, on
January 20 at the Field House.
Gallaudet will next host York (Pa.) College (9-13, 5-8 CAC) on
Monday, February 15, at 4:30 p.m. in the Field House. GU defeated
the Spartans 70-44 on the road on December 9. It was the first time
Gallaudet had beaten York in 20 games.
