Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. - Two teams entered Gallaudet
University's Field House on Wednesday night tied for third-place in
the Capital Athletic Conference women's basketball standings but
only one left still in third-place and unfortunately it weren't the
Bison. Gallaudet suffered it's second loss this season at home, the
first in nearly two months, as time ran out on a last second
comeback against visiting Wesley College, who escaped with a 59-57
victory before 350 fans.
Gallaudet (9-6, 4-4 CAC) trailed by as much as seven, 50-43,
with 7:48 left in regulation but gradually chipped away at the
Wolverine lead. In a three-minute span, the Bison completed an 8-0
run to take their first lead since early in the second half.
GU's lead was short lived as Wesley (10-6, 5-3 CAC) answered with
one of its seven three-pointers on the next trip down the floor.
Gallaudet would tie it twice down the stretch and cut the lead to
one-point, 58-57, with 2.3 seconds left after junior center
Easter Faafiti (Pittsburg, Calif.) grabbed one of
her 17 rebounds and put back a lay-up to give her a game-high 17
points. Faafiti added three assists, three steals and one
block for GU.
Wesley closed out the game with a free-throw by senior guard
Michele Mules (11 points), who had drained the eventual
game-winning three-pointer a minute beforehand to place the
Wolverines up three. Gallaudet missed three shots from three-point
range in the final minute before Faafiti scored the lay-up. The
Bison finished the game 0-for-11 from three-point range while
Wesley made 7-of-27 from long distance. Angie Owens led Wesley with
13 points and six rebounds, Cory Boyd added 10 points and Allison
Beddia scored nine points and grabbed nine rebounds in the win.
GU got off to a slow start as the Bison shot 25 percent from the
field in the opening 20 minutes of play and were held without a
field goal for over 11 minutes. Junior Nukeitra
Hayes (Anderson, Ind.) made a lay-up at the 14:07 mark in
the first half but that would be the last field goal the Bison
would make until Hayes made a jumper in the paint with 2:57 left
before the half. In that scoreless span Gallaudet was 0-for-11 from
the field, 0-for-3 from three-point range and made 5-of-8
free-throw attempts. The Bison entered halftime down nine, 29-20.
Gallaudet went on a 13-4 run to start the second half as the
Bison erased Wesley's nine-point lead and tied the game at 33-33
just four minutes into the new half. Freshman
Shaquana McDonough (Pembroke, Mass.) made a lay-up
at the 14:24 mark to give Gallaudet it's first lead since 12:18
mark in the first half. McDonough finished with nine points,
eight rebounds and two steals. Senior Brittainy
Payne (Pine Hill, N.J.) added six points, eight rebounds
and three assists off the bench for the Bison.
The Bison held a significant advantage in rebounds for the game
as they came down with a season-high 54 boards compared to the 27
ripped down by Wesley. Gallaudet committed 23 turnovers, 13 in the
first half, which led to 17 Wesley points. GU outscored Wesley 25-6
on second chance points and held a 34-28 edge on points scored in
the paint.
Gallaudet has now dropped two straight for only the second time
this season and the first since the year began back on November 15.
The Bison will try to end the skid on Saturday, January 23, when
Gallaudet has the tall ordered of facing nationally ranked and CAC
opponent Marymount (Va.) University (16-1, 7-1 CAC). The Saints,
ranked No. 11 in the nation, will take on the Bison at 2 p.m. in
the Field House. The two teams faced each other back on November 17
as the Saints won 68-59 at home.
