Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. - Junior center Easter
Faafiti (Pittsburg, Calif.) controlled the tempo and
outcome of Saturday's women's basketball game for Gallaudet
University as she recorded a triple-double to lead the Bison to a
54-37 victory over The City College of New York at the Field House.
Faafiti, the Capital Athletic Conference Player of the
Week, was all over the court in the non-conference game as she
played strong defense, hustled to the loose balls and scored in the
paint for the Buff and Blue. She finished the game with game-high
totals for points (17) and steals (12) and grabbed 11 rebounds to
earn her first triple-double with GU.
The Bison (5-3) played an inspired game for their coach
Kevin Cook en route to their third straight win.
CCNY (2-6) led for the first four minutes but Gallaudet took the
lead and never looked back. The Bison used a 20-6 run to take a
23-12 lead midway through the first half and later went into
intermission up 31-18. Gallaudet capitalized on CCNY turnovers as
the Bison scored 18 points off 20 first half turnovers.
Gallaudet left little doubt in the game as the teams began the
second half. GU was sent to the free-throw line 27 times as the
Bison made 14 chances for the game. The Bison started the half on
the line and later extended their lead to the largest amount of the
game 22, 47-25, when freshman Shaquana McDonough
(Pembroke, Mass.) made a lay-up with six minutes to play.
McDonough finished the game with 10 points and five steals while
junior Nukeitra Hayes (Anderson, Ind.) added 16
points and four rebounds and steals. Senior Brittainy
Payne (Pine Hill, N.J.) made a game-high 12 rebounds.
The Beavers outrebounded the Bison by four, 44-40, as CCNY made
35 defensive rebounds. Both teams shot 30 percent from the field.
CCNY turned the ball over 40 times while Gallaudet made a game-high
23 steals. The Beavers made seven blocks while Hayes made three of
Gallaudet's five blocks. CCNY was paced by Rynae Rasley who scored
15 points, 41 percent of the Beavers' offense.
GU is undefeated in December (3-0) and will look to finish out
the month with another win when the Bison host Medgar Evers on
Saturday, December 19, at 2 p.m. in the Field House. This will be
the last game for the Bison before the Winter Break.
