Emerson College ended Gallaudet's 3 game winning streak 73-55 to
win the Gallaudet Holiday Tournament.
The early part of the game was dominated by Nukeitra Hayes who
scored 9 of Gallaudet's first 11 points, and dominated on the
boards as well as blocking shots and causing Emerson to misdirect
their shots, as Gallaudet jumped to an early 11-7 lead. 9 minutes
into the game, both Emerson College and Hayes had 9 points. It
stayed close for much of the first half as Hayes scored
15 of Gallaudet's first 21 points as Gallaudet led 21-17 at one
point.
From that point on Emerson took over, and went into half-time
with a 41-31 lead. In the second half, Emerson held Gallaudet to
8-34 shooting from the field, and held Hayes to 3 points, as
Emerson pulled away to win 73-55. Emerson had 4 players in double
figures, including tournament MVP Maude Okrah with 16, as well as
13 points and 9 rebounds from Lauren Zaniboni and 11 from Bri Papa,
both of which were named to the All-Tournament team.
For Gallaudet, Hayes finished with 23 points, 9 rebounds, and 3
blocks and was named to the All-Tournament team. Ursa Rewolinski
added 14 points and 9 rebounds.
After the game, Gallaudet
Head Coach Kevin Cook talked about the importance of staying
together and continuing to work hard in practice. "We can't get
down about today's game. The first loss of the season is
always tough. But we have a good team and we are hard
workers. We will practice hard tomorrow and work on a few
things and will continue to get better every week. Emerson is a
good team that played well together and we need to play the way
they do."
Gallaudet is now 3-1 on the season. They play their first
road game Wednesday night vs. Capital Athletic Conference
opponent Marymount which is ranked 18th in the nation. This
will be the first of 5 December road games, including two games in
New York December 27 and 29. Gallaudet next plays at home
January 7 at 6 pm vs. Hood College.
